Native species growing in a field

Habinova Habitat

See the habitat potential of your land

Habinova Habitat is our own tool that brings open spatial and species data together into one site analysis. Our ecologist interprets the results and verifies them in the field.

Why Habitat

Preserve what is valuable. Add what is missing.

Existing forests, wetlands, dry meadows and shorelines are identified first. New habitats are placed where the nature value is currently lowest. Ecologists, landscape planners and landscape contractors work from the same data, the same native species and the same Biodiversity Paths and Living Landscape solutions.

What it is

One site analysis from many data sources

Habitat combines the data below for each site. The tool supports our ecologists' judgement; it does not replace it.

  • Aerial imagery, laser scanning and elevation model from the National Land Survey of Finland
  • Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellite data
  • Land cover and soil data
  • Natura 2000 data from the European Environment Agency (EEA)
  • Species observations from Laji.fi
  • An ecologist interprets the results and verifies them in the field.

What the analysis produces

A clear picture of the site before work starts

Finnish habitat types

Habitat types according to the Finnish Red List of Habitats and the 16 built-environment habitat types (FIGBC), with their shares of the site. EUNIS and Habitats Directive codes are shown as additional information.

Nature value hectares, the Finnish way

Ecological condition assessed indicator by indicator, with nature value hectares before and after (SYKE 1/2025, Government Decree 933/2023). AI estimates are kept separate from values our ecologist confirms in the field.

Natura 2000 screening

The nearest SAC and SPA sites and their distances, from the EEA's official data, with an estimate of the risk level.

Areas to protect and stormwater

Existing valuable areas to keep, and where stormwater solutions fit best.

Habinova solution proposals

NATIVE or LOCAL level, Living Landscape elements and zones, with guidance for establishment and management.

Native plant lists

Flowers, grasses, shrubs and trees matched to light, moisture and soil, chosen only from Habinova's own range.

Species identification from photos

Take a photo in the field: Habitat identifies the plant, tells whether it is native or an invasive alien species, and adds the observation to the report.

Report-ready output

A draft in Finnish or English for environmental impact assessment (EIA), Natura assessment and sustainability reporting, ready to print.

How we use it

Habitat in Habinova's workflow

  1. 01

Site mapping before the field visit

Habitat brings the site's data together, so the field visit starts with a clear picture of the area.

  2. 02

    Field verification

Our ecologist checks the results on site, using GPS-located observations and image recognition.

  3. 03

    Planning

Biodiversity Paths and Living Landscape solutions are planned, and native plants are placed where they work best.

  4. 04

    Implementation and management

Habitats are established and managed according to a site-specific plan.

  5. 05

    Monitoring and reporting

Results are monitored and reported with the same calculation method from year to year, so changes are comparable.

Ecological compensation

Ecological compensation and nature-value markets

Habitat's baseline and its before/after calculation in nature value hectares give a documented starting point when you look into:

  • Assessing a project's impacts on nature
  • Voluntary ecological compensation under the new Nature Conservation Act
  • Producing nature credits
  • Sustainability reporting (CSRD/ESRS E4, EU Taxonomy)
